What is Brainstorming?

Brainstorming is where a group of you sit down and throw around ideas on a specific issue and then determine which one of the ideas is the best one.

With every brainstorming session appoint a facilitator whose job is to encourage, guide the ideas and write them down. Ensure you do this in a relax environment and where people can joke and talk comfortably.

No such thing as a silly idea

Remember all ideas are good ideas so don’t discourage silly suggestions.

It is also suggested to vary the expertise in the group and always good to have someone who has no idea the the topic at all, they sometimes come up with things that are overlooked by the experts who tend to have tunnel vision.

So how do you Brainstorm?

  1. Define your Problem.
  2. Give yourself a time limit (up to 30 mins).
  3. As ideas are shouted out, jot them on a board.
  4. Once time is up select the best ideas.
  5. Out of all the best ideas, rate them out of 10 on how well it meets the criteria. Make sure everyone agrees to your scores.
  6. Add up the scores.
  7. The winner is the highest scored.

Brainstorming is best used in large companies who need to constantly come up with new ideas and keep up with the times. The same principles can be applied to you idea so get some people together and see what you can come up with.
